Electrolysis and waxing offer two different approaches to removing unwanted hair. Electrolysis is intended to provide permanent hair removal, while waxing temporarily removes hair from the root and leaves the skin smooth for several weeks.

The best method depends on the treatment area, your hair type, and the results you would like to achieve. Your esthetician can help you select the option best suited to your needs.

Electrolysis Hair Removal

About the treatment

Electrolysis is a permanent hair removal method that treats hairs individually. It is suitable for all skin tones and hair types, including blonde, red, grey, and white hair, which generally responds less effectively to laser hair removal. It can also be used to remove remaining hairs following a series of laser treatments.

How electrolysis works

A very fine filament is inserted into the natural opening of the hair follicle. A small amount of electrical energy is then delivered to disable the cells responsible for hair growth. The treated hair is gently removed afterward.

Treatment methods

  • Thermolysis: Thermolysis uses a high-frequency current that produces heat within the hair follicle. This heat acts on the cells responsible for hair growth.
  • Blend method: The blend method combines thermolysis with galvanic current. The two forms of energy work together within the follicle and may be particularly useful for certain resistant hairs, although each hair may take longer to treat.

Number and length of treatments

Multiple sessions are required because not all hairs are visible or active at the same time. The overall length of the program varies according to the treatment area, the amount and structure of the hair, its growth cycle, and each person’s response to treatment.

A complete program may extend over 18 months or longer. Appointments generally become shorter and less frequent as the amount of hair decreases.

Factors that may affect results

  • Inconsistent attendance at appointments
  • Tweezing or waxing hairs between sessions
  • Hormonal changes or imbalances
  • Certain medications
  • The amount, density, and growth cycle of the hair

Following the recommended appointment schedule helps ensure that hairs can be treated at the appropriate time. Avoid tweezing or waxing them between sessions.

Waxing

About the treatment

Waxing is a temporary hair removal method that removes hair from the root. It can be used on different areas of the face and body and leaves the skin smooth for longer than shaving.

What the treatment involves

A thin layer of warm wax is applied to the skin in the direction of hair growth. A strip is then pressed onto the wax and removed quickly in the opposite direction, pulling the hairs from the root.

In addition to removing hair, waxing can lift away some dead cells from the skin’s surface. Temporary redness or sensitivity may occur after the treatment.
